Achim earned his M.Ed. and B.A. in teaching at the University of Stuttgart, where he specialized in German Language and Literature and Political Science. Achim also earned an M.A. in German Studies from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where his thesis focused on discourses of memory and German-Jewish identity in selected literary award speeches by Barbara Honigmann. During his undergraduate studies, he spent a semester abroad at Università degli Studi Roma Tre, where he also improved his Italian language skills.
Achim’s academic interests include German-Jewish contemporary literature, memory studies, GDR cultural history and women's drama and theater. In addition to his research, he has extensive teaching experience in German as a foreign language, women's drama, academic writing, literary history, and medieval German.
His current research also explores literary and photographic engagements with the war in Ukraine, including works by Ukraine-born authors writing in German.
Outside of academia, Achim enjoys exploring the coffee shops of the research triangle, cooking, running, and attending concerts, theaters, and museums.
