Bethany Bowen-Wefuan

Graduate Student

After receiving her bachelor’s degree in German Studies and English in 2007, Bethany earned her master’s in German Studies from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2010. While working on her master’s degree, she studied abroad for one year at Philipps-Universität Marburg, fell in love with teaching, and discovered Poetic Realism. She brought her love for teaching and Poetic Realism to CDG in 2011, where she has taught elementary to advanced German, won the Helga Bessent Teaching Award, and developed her dissertation project on Poetic Realism. Her dissertation, entitled “Framing the Familiar: Painting and Vision in German Realism”, examines descriptions of paintings in the novels and novellas of Gottfried Keller, Adalbert Stifter, Theodor Storm, and Theodor Fontane. Her research interests include literary realism, German Realism, Romanticism, and nineteenth-century aesthetic theory.
